The TCU Is Alive and Well
=========================

The most recent program in HP's Technology Closeup Series of Interactive
television
broadcasts is now available on videotape. It's entitled Technology Close-Up --
Decision
Support: From Client/Server to Data Warehousing, and this program focuses on
step by
step approaches for opening up traditional HP 3000 environments to allow the
use of Client/Server and Data Warehousing technologies. There is an overview,
comparison
and lively discussion of the benefits and pitfalls associated with each
technology.
Channel Partners play a key role in the move to these technologies. This
program
includes a look at solutions from Information Builders, M.B. Foster, Omnidex,
Minisoft
and Speedware in addition to HP's own Intelligent Warehouse solution.

Videotapes of last July's HP 3000 TCU program, which covered client/server
and data warehousing, are now available. To order videotapes, use your web
browser
to visit http://www.hp.com/go/tapes

The next Technology Closeup Broadcast will be held October 1st, and cover HP-UX
release 10.20 and the new HP 9000s based on the 64-bit PA8000 processor.

Although this isn't an MPE broadcast, I know a number of the readers of this
newsgroup
also have HP9000s. I thought some of you might be interested. Here's a copy
of the
invitation.

Technology Breakthroughs -- Beyond the Hype

In 1986, Hewlett-Packard introduced a new computer architecture called PA-RISC.
Over the past ten years, the PA-RISC-based HP 9000 has become the premier UNIX
platform
for both commercial and technical applications, as well as a defacto standard
for
software developers around the world.

Ten years is a long time in the computer industry and HP has continuously
reinvented the
HP 9000 to track the changes in the IS industry. Most recently, this process
has led to
two key developments:

* The 64-bit PA-8000 processor, the newest and most powerful chip in the
PA-RISC
        family, and;

* Version 10.20 of HP-UX, the first release of HP-UX to leverage the power
of the
        PA-8000.

What do these new technologies have to offer? And how will these new
technologies fit
into your current and future computing environment? How will they affect your
investment
in the HP 9000 and in HP-UX?

A Technical, In-Depth Look at the PA-8000 Chip
and HP-UX Release 10.20 -- Without the Hype.
===============================================

During this Technology Close-Up broadcast, to be presented Tuesday, October 1,
1996, we
will discuss the latest HP 9000 Enterprise server offerings in specific
technical terms.
We'll provide detailed answers to the questions that you've been asking about
the new
directions that HP is taking, including:

* We're deploying HP 9000s across our entire enterprise. Just how much
performance
do the new PA-8000 chips offer? And what can I do with a 64-bit chip
that I
        can't do with a 32-bit chip?

* How will my current applications benefit from the PA-8000 chip? Will they
need to
be rewritten in order to run on the new chips?

* What's new in release 10.20 of HP-UX? How difficult is the upgrade? Will
10.20
work with our existing 32-bit machines?

* Our network is growing by leaps and bounds. Managing that growth is
turning out to
be more difficult than we anticipated. Isn't there an easier way to
manage
things like subnets and IP addressing? And what's HP doing to help me
take
advantage of things like the Internet?

* We use HP 9000 servers and workstations. What do the PA-8000 chip and
HP-UX
version 10.20 bring to the workstation environment? In particular, what
should
software developers be doing to get the most out of the PA-8000?
