Some comments:
The 918RX has 4 half high IO slots. The FW card takes two of these.

I  wouldn't bet that on a 918rx the 100mb Nic card is providing any
speed over the internal 10mb interface.
Thus, switching out the 100mb card for the second FW card may provide a
solution.
Also, I would look at the source of the IO. Several well known bugs in
the OS can cause large
amounts of IO activity. If the IO is aplication related, I would look at
repacking/capacity issues.
