But then your counters will be reset only when you reboot. If you need to
reset the counters more often than you reboot, you need a scheduled job to
do it, or run the commands manually.

Not so. The command
:SETCOUNTER COUNTER=OUTSP;BASE=1;MAX=1000
will roll the spoolfile counter over to 1 automatically every time it
exceeds 1000. It's also smart enough to not duplicate file numbers that
currently exist. Our 928 has run for as long as 13 months without a reboot.
