No one stays ignorant for long when they make persuit of knowledge...
Don't know where a FAQ is, but I know an answer or two to
your questions....
MPE/iX was and is the Next generation of MPE for the HP-RISC
processors. The name was changed from MPE/X to MPE/iX to update
the fact that MPE was and is Migrating to the Posix standard. MPE/iX
is simply the latest version of MPE. There are two modes, mostly
transparent to everyone, that MPE/iX can operate in: Native Mode, which
is true HP-RISC operating system; And Compatibility Mode, which is
the old MPE/V operating system.
The Unix shell for MPE/iX was added, I believe as of version 4.5 of
MPE/iX. The shell is a part of the MPE/iX core system that provides
Posix/Unix support under the Base MPE/iX operating system. What does
that mean? well...simply put, the Shell is a native mode program that
provides a Unix/Posix CI. So to answer to your question, is MPE/iX
an OS with a Unix shell...well no, there are versions of MPE/iX that
do not have any of the Unix/Posix support. Which one your system
runs under depends on when you bought your system, and wheather or
you have upgraded an older system to the newer MPE/iX.
Is MPE/iX required for the newer HP3000 systems? Well...it is the
current OS being sent when you buy a new HP3000. Do you have to use
the Shell or any of the Posix functionality...no, you can operate under
Native mode MPE/iX or if you perfer MPE/V with use of compatibility
mode.
Well, hope that helps......If I've mis-stated any fact, please don't
flame me....but do correct the mis-state...
