This is considered one of the reasons Google is giving Mozilla (Firefox)  300 million a year.

IIRC, if Apple had gone under, Mickey$oft would have had to be 'broken up' as it would have become a monopoly. So 'investing' in Apple was no generous motion by Mickey$oft, it was a legal move to save them from intervention by the US government.
