They can coexist.  The issue is the BNC to RJ-45 conversion.  Some switches,
albeit a little more expensive, have BNC modules and the switch converts as
needed.  Another option is to buy a BNC to RJ-45 converter for under $100
dollars and just plug into the switch.  Here's the first one I found on

I agree with Tim here, consider fiber through the shop.  One of my clients
got the fiber modules for the longer runs between switches.  It works great.
Like I said, you can start inexpensively and add other options as the value
of performance rises above the cost.
