Tukey was co-developer of one of the most significant
computer algorithms ever invented, the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The
Cooley-Tukey FFT algorithm was developed in 1965, and is used today in
applications like image processing, voice recognition and synthesis,
inspection and testing of engines and machinery, data compression,
computer games -- it's incredibly pervasive. The FFT is to signal
processing what quicksort is to ordering, and represented the same kind
of fundamental change in algorithm design.
