 Hi Tracy,
It marked the 1st tape as "bad", so I cleaned the tape drive and tried again.It marked that brand new tape as "bad" too.

I hate when that happens.  I keep a spare drive.

Sometimes a cleaning tape will cure it.  You have to be willing to 
sacrifice another tape to find out.

In those case I also run the cleaning tape 3 times in a row.
