I can't comment on other products (RoadRunner, ORBiT's Backup Plus, etc.),
so I'll stick to what I (pretend to) know : HP's TurboStore.

Whether explicitly (;ONLINE) or implicitly (;ONLINE=START or ;ONLINE=END),
TurboStore will create a sync point and log all modifications brought to the
original files into a "log" called the shadow (quoting from memory). Of
course, at some point in time the shadow will use disk space. That means
that, if the modification rate on files being stored is especially high, the
shadow will have a tendency to grow quite big. Now, factor in dataset
synchronization issues linked to TurboImage integrity (assuming ;PARTIALDB
is not used) and you get a recipe for eating up disk space. IIRC, that space
is marked as transient, so my best guess is that it is less subject to
extent size and free space fragmentation issues.

In other words, expect comparable behavior with TurboStore.

Disclaimer : I'm quoting from my own memory, dating back to the good ole'
5.0 beta test days, back in, well, fall'94 I guess.

And you think aging is a graceful process ?
