I had the same experience as you, ie. rcmd: Lost connection.  I was
never able to get it to work and finally gave up.  My conclusion is that
in some way it is broken.

As you mention, outgoing remsh seems to work, although we ended up using
the REMSH/REXEC programs written by Telamon.  These can be downloaded
from their server at ftp://ftp.telamon.com/dist/.
