Paul,
in addition to what Donna explained, I would like to suggest
using a slightly different approach for your transfer task...
If possible, use tar or zip on the source system to package
the directory tree of interest, transfer that single file with
ftp, and then un-tar or un-zip on the MPE/iX side. Both, tar
and zip are available for MPE/iX (tar is included, zip is an
extra download, based on Info-ZIP.org open source) and as they
are "at home" in the Posix area, they will unpack the files as
proper bytestream files (and handle HFS filenames properly).
