Great idea. I seem to recall the Image Enchilada project was spawned
trying to allow a user implemented way to do these type of things. The
problem is picking a standard way to implement these add-ons. Certainly
building shells around the calls is doable, but a generic mechanism that
everyone would be able to enhance/utilize would be preferred.
Put me on your list of collaborators (conspirators?)!

Seems to me that one could write a "shell" of intrinsics and utilities to
give everything except the VARSTRING feature, while still retaining all
Image functionality, without changing Image.
