Greg responded with some interesting features about the UD (United Devices)
agent which I was aware of, but which I admittedly did not make enough
mention of the fact that they don't work! FWIW: I am running in both
Windows 98 and a Windows 95 environments - none of this NT or W-2000 stuff
for me (yet).
For instance, the "snooze" feature is supposed to be a "configurable" number
(stored and maintained on a remote host) that is simply ignored in the
version of UD that I picked up and installed. By default, every time you
place the UD agent in "snooze" mode, it will only sleep for 5 minutes. I
would gladly accept this as an equal feature to the Parabon solution - if it
worked!
On my particular machine, selecting "run only as a screen saver" doesn't
seem to limit it to that state. While watching processes consume my CPU, I
have configured the UD agent this way - only to have it kick in an active
state while I was still working. Perhaps it was merely checking to see if I
was idle...
The only thing worse than vaporware (IMHO) is intrusive software that is
released - but doesn't work.
Now, as to Wirt's concerns about "we trust the gringos who are offering us
some shiny beads", I wholeheartedly agree. It is only because of the
importance of the issue to my situation that I am even willing to conceded
letting my machine cycles be used in this manner at all. It does bother me
that I don't have the choice of selecting "cancer tasks only" or of
rejecting certain tasks. Right now that is a personal risk that I have
decided is worth taking...
