Thomas asked about editing SAMBA shares that have Roman-8 characters
to which Lars replied ...

Yes, I know of one -- Qedit for Windows. Unfortunately, Qedit for
Windows is not smart enough to do the necessary translations for local
files (which is what files on a SAMBA server would look like to QW).
QW is a client/server editor and a local editor. If you use QW in
client/server mode, it will correctly do all the necessary
translations for Roman-8 to Windows characters sets (and the other way
around). This is possible because Qedit on the server "knows" that it
is dealing with Roman-8 characters.

At some future time, I believe that we could add an option to Qedit
for Windows to say "when you open this local file, assume that the
character set is Roman-8". We would then have to do the necessary
translations at the appropriate moments. We don't have any short-term
plans to add such a feature to Qedit for Windows.

For now, you would have to open the host document, select all of it,
copy it to the clipboard, paste it into a local Qedit for Windows
document, and then save this. The resulting file would have Windows
characters and not Roman-8 characters, so you could then edit the file
using MS Word, Notepad, or even Qedit for Windows.

This doesn't really answer Thomas' original question, but it does give
an answer to Lar's question :-).

Cheers,
