I have 4 DDS-2 drives, actually I'm more concerned
with keeping this one compatible with the others.

It needs a lobotomy. Experience at ORBiT tells me
that DDS-2 is the worst of the DDS implementations.
Don't fix it, but replace it with something else.
If you want to stay with DDS, I'd suggest a DDS-3
instead of 4 (DDS-4 runs into tape compatibility
issues with backward compatibility). I'd also be
extremely suspicious of any tape created with the
DDS-2.
