The conclusion?
That either the connection sending posts TO the newsgroup must be cut, or
email addresses of those who post to the listserve must be stripped,
replaced with "address not available", or replaced a generic address like
"[log in to unmask]" when posts are fed to the newsgroup. Comments
anyone?

As current "keeper of the gateway flame" :), let me add a couple of
things:
. The gateway is pretty much non-discriminatory about what comes and goes.
For a while a year or so ago we did eliminate some of the messages that
were
cross-posted to various newsgroups from being forwarded to HP3000-L, but
that is no longer in place due to the next item.
. UTC (i.e. Jeff) has already limited what HP3000-L will accept based upon
whether or not you are subscribed directly to that list. Therefore even
if
you post directly to the newsgroup, you must be a HP3000-L subscriber to
have your message sent to out to the list members (I also believe Jeff
manually allows some messages through on occasion from non-subscribers,
but being a subscriber would make that process a whole lot easier :).
. On multiple occasions, people have brought up the idea that the gateway
be shutdown to reduce the amount of spam people receive. Although that
may help, it will by no means stop it. As an example, I have a msn.com
account that I use when I travel. I have "never" sent an email through
that account anywhere, yet I get dozens of spam emails a day sent to it.
So, I'm willing to entertain any ideas that the list members (both on
the newsgroup and HP3000-L) can come to some consensus on:
. Shut it down (which will cut off many good contributors/lurkers).
. Modify the email addresses from postings originally made on HP3000-L
(which will only slow the spammers down as I'm sure that any good
email address harvesting software already parses the addresses).
. Leave it alone.
. Something else entirely. ;)
Please keep any discussions on the list as I want whatever comes about
to be agreeable to the majority here.

Michael L Gueterman
