Well, don't be too afraid.  The President does not appoint Justices in a
vacuum.  The Senate must also approve the appointment.  Right now the Senate
is split 50-50 if Bush wins and 49-51 if Gore wins (Lieberman's seat would
likely be filled by a Republican when the seat is filled by the Republican
Governor).  (Unless of course things remain really partisan and the VP
breaks the tie :-( )
