>My question is - Why check the JCW?

Well, it depends. The intrinsic's status variable tells if the
process creation was successful, whereas the child process could
use the JCW to report results of its execution (somewhat similar
to a process return status in Posix land).

Note however, that the JCW belongs to the job/session context,
i.e. if you create multiple concurrent child processes, they will
be sharing the same JCW or CI vars. Race conditions ahead ;-)
