OdxShare Freeware to be Launched at HPWorld in Chicago.

Here is some HP3000 news that might be of interest to HPWorld attendees.
As part of a joint presentation on using SQL on TurboImage databases
that I'm doing with Terry O'Brien, Executive Vice President of Dynamic
Information Systems (DISC), DISC will be providing a subset of their SQL
server technology free to all attendees of the tutorial.

I am advised that the DISC provided software will include:

OdxSQL - a terminal based generalized SQL utility for managing data
using SQL access to a TurboImage database.

OdxODBC api - an ODBC/SQL Call Level Interface to DISC's SQL engine that
allows HP3000 programs to use the the industry standard api against
TurboImage
databases. This is the same api interface that DB2 and SQLServer use
for their call level interface to the databases.

JDBC Driver - a fully functional, production and commerical grade JDBC
driver for TurboImage.

A Microsoft Windows development version of the same software that works
on flat files, Oracle, DB2, and SQLServer to allow TurboImage program
development on Windows systems. This is a fully functional single
developers package that includes the Omnidex indexing product to
introduce developers to Omnidex's cross platform capabilities. DISC
will provide a single user developer's version on Linux if there is any
interest as part of the program.

The software specifically does not include the Omnidex Indexing
Technology for fast and flexible retrieval or the Omnidex Network
Services for host to host communications. However, the software allows
easy SQL access to TurboImage through the OdxSQL utility and allows
programs
written on the HP3000 to use industry standard interfaces to existing
TurboImage data.
For instance, a COBOL program written using the OdxODBC api on the HP3000
could be easily ported to run under Windows using any third party ODBC
Driver.
Alternatively, a COBOL program written on a Windows laptop could be
deployed
on the HP3000, assuming screen interface issues were taken into account.

As SIGOMNIDEX Chairman, I have asked DISC to consider making the
software available via free download from their web site after the
conference. In the spirit of giving back something to the HP3000
community and if there is interest from this group, Terry will have a
web page set up to register and download the free software after
HPWorld. We will be handing out CD's of the software at our tutorial
on 'Practical SQL Access to IMAGE Databases' which is on Friday,
August 24th at 2:00pm at HPWorld for those who can make the presentation.

Terry O'Brien can be reached directly at [log in to unmask] if you have any
specific questions or you can email me at [log in to unmask]
