The supreme irony is that the complaint has generated hundreds of times
more email than the original posting, thus giving MiniSoft an even bigger
plug.

Personally I'm all for product announcements, I love them.

I certainly agree. As a newbe that had to set-up a development site with
hp3000, I used the list as a great resource for products while many of the
mails I browse through where vendors-originated.

I think information about new products, whether from vendors or not,
are certainly more germane to the list than any of the jokes that get
passed around ... even if I haven't already seen the joke a couple of
dozen times.

Certainly we would have to forbid ALL off-topic material before we
decided to ban on-topic but commercially-motivated material.
