Well, I have answered my own question.  It happens that the session I tried
this on was a programmatically-initiated session from QEDIT for windows.
Since that doesn't use NS/VT, those variables, such as HPSTDIN_NETWORK_ADDR
and the various HPVT variables are not set.  You can connect via telnet and
get the same effect.

I tried Per's suggestion and it didn't work.  I was not able to see any
HP-defined variables, only the user-defined ones.  In fact, the
documentation confirms that this is the expected behavior.  Has this changed
on a later release (we're on 6.5 PP2)?  Is there a patch available to enable
this capability?
