I am trying to install on a new 4 GB drive. This has happened on 3 of these
drives so I am beginning to think it will not work on the HP3000. The drive
is an ST1515ON.

Are you trying to do an install onto this drive?
I'm trying to know why you are booting from alternate path.
Have you run ODE's mapper to confirm that the system recognizes your
hardware devices as you expect them to be?
This would take longer if booting from alternate path - but still
worthwhile doing.
