Any reason in particular it has to be Win2k or XP?
It would be dog slow even if you could get it running on that hardware.

You might be better off trying Linux on it; Try buring a Live Linux
distibution to CD-R and boot the box with it to see if you like it and
what kind of performance you'll get with it.

Something like Knoppix would fit the bill although there are a lot of
live distros out there to try.

It would certainly give you a decent basic PC to do word
processing/spreadsheet tasks plus a lot more is usually included with
most Linux distros. If you're happy with it then download a full linux
install and go to town (I think Fedora just came out with a new
version.)
Sorry; assuming you have broadband that is...

At the speed that that PC is running at you won't get decent performance
out of XP/2000 and sometimes you can't even boot into them without a
BIOS update; I had an HP Pavillion 7900-series, 1ghz PIII 512 meg of
SDRAM that wouldn't boot into XP until you flashed (updated) the BIOS.

That's another thing to check for is to see if there's an updated BIOS
that would allow the PC to run XP/2000.
I personally don't think so based on the age of the PC but you're
welcome to look around.
IMHO, Linux would be your best bet.

Can the response involve pyrotechnic compounds?

Seriously, a quick search at www.compaq.com shows that the Presario 5248
is only supported under Windows Me, 98 and 95. There is no mention of
Windows NT, 2000 or XP so I think you do not want to install any of
these on this PC.

The 5248 has a 400MHz AMD-K6 with 64MB of slow RAM for a maximum of
384MB.

This is woefully inadequate for W2K or WXP.

PC experts:

I am trying to install either w2k or wxp on a oldish PC Compaq Presario
5248 with AMD.

The reason is that the system just froze when booting up.

The problem is the system will not go past the identify of hardware.

Any suggestions ?

Olav.
