oh dear :-( what kind of training? informal on-the-job or did you
actually go to hp?

i guess there's no point in telling you how important well-thought-out
and well-disciplined backup jobs are. once the dust has settled,
personally, i'd make a top priority task of getting your back up
strategy documented. but more than that -- change control has *got*
to be part of your day-to-day operations.

get into sysgen and then into 'misc'. do a 'show'. at the bottom,
you'll see the logon prompt and the ci prompt settings. the system
will have to be rebooted for any changes to take effect.

not much to be done there. you'll just have to live with the new
display order.

devices -- like printers -- can be added on the fly using ioconfig.
do make a point of knowing your printer's class names before you
start.

i'm not sure what you're asking here. i think some of what you're
after is in sysgen. something like 'default sort fields' might
actually be file based (and that file is most likely missing now).
there's nothing system related that control sort fields, however.

if i were you, i'd be in my boss' office pitching a fit. you've
obviously been given charge of a *critical* system. if no one cared
about this box, then they wouldn't be griping about the data loss
now. there's lot of folks in the same boat that you're finding
yourself in now. your company won't pay the money to keep the system
properly maintained (this is no reflection on you, btw) and yet expect
someone (you? hp? 3rd-party vendors?) to save their <insert body
part here> from the fire when it's their own bloody fault! if there
is value in this system (probably at the data/process level) to your
company then it's worth every single cent to see that it's properly
supported....no if's and's or but(t)'s. there's no reason for you to
bear the brunt of bad management decisions. - d
