As far as I know, NS/3000 has NEVER been required for shadowing (it
certainly wasn't on the Classic). You can (or you used to be able to) buy
only the shadowing portion of Netbase (Shareplex). NS/3000 gives you file
transfer (like a remote Fcopy) and remote logon, including Remote "file
equates". These are generally more convenient to use on a casual basis
than the Remote File Access from Quest, but the latter are probably better
in a production environment because you don't have to create a session on
the second machine. I have a feeling that you need NS/3000 at both ends
for the file transfer, but only at the originating end for remote logon (it
uses VT).
My recollection is that you get NS/3000 as a single package, but that you
can "mix and match" the various parts of Netbase.
There are some interesting and non-obvious things that you can do with
Netbase. I set up up development on the second machine and shadowed
program files in the opposite direction to data. This can get VERY
interesting, especially when someone is using the program and has the
program file open! I found several bugs for Quest this way!
