Nice idea !. 

I can think of two ways that the extra CCTL byte is attached. 

(1) Declaring the file with CCTL in the file section 

(2) Using WRITE REC AFTER N rather than just WRITE REC. 

(This second one is interesting - the existence of a single stray " write after "statement 
causes the compiler to add the CCTL character to the file).

Brennan,

My suspicion is that you are being 'bitten' by a temporary file of the same
name.  Some how your COBOL programs writes its output to a temporary file
with CCTL (which accounts for the extra byte) and when your FTP process
runs it gets that one.   I think that if you were to check the dates (listf
fname,3) of the file that you indicated in one of your earlier e-mails
you'll see that its dates do not correspond to the time that your ran your
COBOL process that was supposed to write to that file.
