Most of zebra's printers can do both direct thermal and thermal
transfer. I'm most familiar with the z4000's and it's just a matter of
flipping a switch to go between the modes.

The Zebra printers are not thermal printers in the normal sense. In
other
words, they do not use heat-sensitive paper. They are thermal-TRANSFER
printers. They use a ribbon of that contains an ink that thermally
fuses to
the label. This method produces an image of excellent density and
saturation, with very good shelf life.

As near as I can tell these Zebra printers are all thermal printers.
This is
fine for point of sale and other short lived labels but we've got a need
for
labels for spare parts that get put on shelves in less than wonderful
conditions, sometimes for years. Thermal labels tend to fade to black in
light or heat. So I'm watching this thread with great interest, hoping
for a
solution using the dot matrix impact printers of the subject line.
