Correct Denys - I am running it s l o w l y in interpretive mode to verify my theory (still running after 2 hours!) but 3 lines in the report were offset to the left by 2 bytes ...All the IMAGE statements were correct and variables OK (not offset by spaces in the variables) 

If I think what this thing is doing to run old BASIC in interpretive mode it is really working (hard)

  Realizing that BASICOMP runs in and produces CM code, it sounds to me like
  your program is running at the ragged edge of Compatibility Mode
  limitations.  Are you saying that your 4X, 30A statement actually showed us
  as 2X,30A on the output?
