I imagine it's possible.
Back in the late 60's we had a second phone put in our house. The phone company (who owned the phones back then) put in a little unit that plugged into the outlet and used the house electrical wiring to go to the second phone.
Mainly it's a question of isolation. I imagine the same principle could be used for LANs. Just a mater of collisions when you get more that a few on it.

Even more humorously, the thought occurred to me, what if someone developed
an interface between networking and local power grid? After all, the only
signal on these AC circuits are the 50Hz or 60Hz cycles on them. The only
real problems are the Voltages and the Amps. If these could be overcome,
there could be extra bandwitdh that the Internet could utilize! :-)
After all most countries have electrical power everywhere, even in areas
where there are no telephone circuits! Just think of the marking strategy
for "Power Interface Cards!" (PICs)....
I also thought Wirt Atmar could design an April Fool's web page for this
"bogus" product next year.
Then more ominously, I thought, "What if someone has already invented it?",
"Perhaps the Government?" 60 cycles..... hmmmmm.
