While from one perspective John's above point is well taken,
the problem is that corporate CIO's and etc. listen or at least
take account of what the "walletheads" are or are *not* saying.
If their technical subordinates come to them with a proposal
for a solution that involves an HP 3000, the CIO may just
remember the report of an interview with Carly as reported by
the trade rags.  If what the CIO remembers is that "Carly said
NT and UNIX were strategic directions for HP, but MPE and
the HP 3000 are not on the list", that's bad....
