Anybody remember the '60s TV shows "Petticoat Junction" and "Green Acres?"
I can just picture the Martian version of Mr. Haney, with the Polar Lander
in the back of his truck, speaking to a skeptical audience: "Yessiree,
ladies and gentlemen, this here contraption is a gen-yoo-wine imported
Earthling spacecraft, complete with robot arm! It was only used once,
before I acquired it from a little old lady in the South Polar Region.
Just think, for the measly sum of only 25 quiggles, you can own your very
own piece of alien technology -- a piece of the history of our great solar
system... Wait just a minute, that confounded thing is beeping at me
again... There, all you have to do is give it a little kick and put it back
in "safe mode" and it's as quiet as a frooble. Wouldn't you love to have
this priceless artifact in your living room? Buy it now, and I'll throw in
these here two matching probes absolutely free of charge!"

Listers -
Can't resist this thread -

I think the absence of signals from the lander proves a theory - There IS
life on Mars, and it's intelligent - they don't like being spied on by
Earthlings! They ATE (and/or Destroyed) the things that fell out of their
sky!
