Let me replay the Duane Percox broken record of Distributed Objects:
Asked at IRPOF'96:
Q: Has HP considered providing Distributed Object Technology for the
HP 3000?
A: Our customers haven't been asking for this so we don't have any plans.
Asked at HPWorld'96:
Q: Distributed Object Technology is the future of software development.
What is HP doing to provide this functionality on the HP 3000?
A: Our customers haven't been asking for this so we don't have any plans.
Asked at HPWorld'97:
Q: What are HP's plans for providing Distributed Object Technology on
the HP 3000?
A: Our customers haven't been asking for this so we don't have any plans.
Let me take this opportunity to communicate with folks from HP who are
listening in on this forum:
1. Distributed Object Technology is not going away. It is becoming
more pervasive and would be an awesome way for the 3k to interoperate
within a heterogenous network.
2. This is like very forward thinking hardware issues. Your typical
customer is not aware of the possibilities. Just because they don't
ask doesn't mean they wouldn't like to have it.
3. This is a great area for tilling the soil while the developer community
comes up to speed on the possibilities. A little education, a little
joint discovery. A little foundation laying.
4. I challenge HP to articulate a vision for software objects on the
HP 3000, especially distributed ones. Talk to the Java and Netscape
porting teams about this and let them lead a little. You never know
where this could end up. Besides, IBM has done this for the AS/400 and
you don't want them to use that against you.
5. Don't forget that you sell a CORBA 2.0 compliant ORB for HP-UX.
