I wouldn't be surprised if the backup is a tad quicker with
MAXTAPEBUF, but I haven't done any timings.

IIRC, an HP engineer in Europe did some tests on this a couple of
years ago, but I can't find my copy of his results.

However, caveats:

  INTER will create a tape set that is harder to restore,
  both for ordinary restores and for damaged tape restores.
  The speed reduction is probably not worth those costs.

  MAXTAPEBUF will create a tape that ordinary tape utilities
  cannot correctly read (e.g., to check the tape or to
  copy the tape (possibly including STORCOPY)).
  Our X-OVER product, and our free TAPETAPE program,
  have the ability to read such tapes, however.
