How far does the install get?

It's actually not that bad if the only problem is that you can't/don't want
to install the Linux bootloader (generally only if you're dual booting and
don't want to affect the original OS at all). The boot floppy simply has
the boot loader and the kernel on it. Once it's loaded from floppy, the
rest of the boot sequence happens just as though the kernel got loaded form
disk.
