Okay, thanks to numerous suggestions from the HP3000-L Brain Trust
I located some 60 meter DDS tapes that have either the "Media
Recognition System" or the four vertical bars or both. However,
they still won't work in my DDS-2 drive. Instead of the "write
protect" message I am now getting:

STORE ENCOUNTERED MEDIA WRITE ERROR ON LDEV 7 (S/R 1454)
SPECIFICALLY, STORE RECEIVED ERROR -35 FROM THE IO SYSTEM (S/R 1557)
7:37/#S1749/60/STORE IS MARKING MEDIA 1 BAD ON LDEV 7

This is repeated for the other 60 meter tapes (MRS/four vertical
bars). So, any other ideas?

BTW, the drive in question is a C1539A.
