I have a situation (submitted by a namesake) where he has a large file on
an HP3000 that he is transferring to a PC platform using FTP.

1)  The file transfer takes 3 hours using FTP on a typical Ethernet LAN.

2)  The file is a flat ASCII file.

3)  He wants to compress it before file transfer and decompress it later.

I suggested using WRQ's Reflection instead since it has an inherent
compression feature.  He said he would time it to see if it helps.

He was still curious if there is a program that is compatible on the HP3000
and PCs.  I was thinking Lempel-Ziv but I'm not sure if it will work.
