To know what step all jobs are at, you can use the MPE :SHOWPROC command

:SHOWPROC ;JOB=@J

This will show you the current running job tree for all running jobs.  As
for your example, I think you will find some clever ideas using the :PAUSE
command and files as semaphores in the archive.

Is there a good way for a job to change its job name.  This would be used
to
signal the states that a job is in.  in the specific case I wish to change
the backup job name form backup to verify to signal that the backup has
completed and we are now reading the tape to verify it is readable.
