presuming sufficient disk space, "a lot" :)

part of the answer, however, depends on how the files are named.  I've heard of cases where files were named practically the same (i.e., sequentially numbered files) and having file counts in the 10's of thousands in a single group.  I've also heard/seen this cause problems (but I may also be thinking of the "classic" systems on MPE/V)
