Well, the patch was not installed.  This was based on the docs which
indicated that the patch was suited fo systems with less than 96 MB.
This old 980 has 160 MB.
 
Thanks for the suggestion though.
 
Also, Birket suggested POSIX overhead as a potential contributing factor.
It is worth further investigation, but we are not directly using any
POSIX features at this point so I'm at a loss as to how it might come into
play.
