Richard,

Openview System Manager is a client/server based tool that is probably
used very differently at every site that has it installed! Some of the
functionality that it can provide is:
o) Consolidation of consoles from multiple systems onto a single (or
     a fewer number of) PCs.
o) Provides for (user definable) exception based system management
(ie. you can filter out events that the operators do not care about,
so that they only see those that they ARE supposed to deal with).
o) Provides an "Auto Response" mechanism whereby the system can
automatically take a particular action based upon the occurrence of
a particular event (ex. Automatically restart a spooler for a particular
     ldev number if it dies).
o) Allows for easy "remote" system management. You can (for example)
easily operate a system physically located at another site just like
if it was in the same room with you.

There are many other facets to the product. One of the side benefits
that we enjoy from it, is the ability to have multiple instances of a
"read only" system console. That is, we can have one or more PC
windows open, along with one or more sessions all viewing the contents
of the console buffer simultaneously. There have been many, many times
where I can't understand exactly what an operator is trying to tell me they
are seeing at the console. Now (while I'm at home) , I can see what they
are seeing, at the same time they are seeing it!
Openview System Manager can be a very complex product to operate,
and works best if you have applications that you can modify, although
there are facilities to enable you to deal with our existing console
messages (its all a matter of how much CPU you want to devote to
managing your system).

I believe that the product only supports management of HP3000 hosts.
There is another product put out by HP that is Unix based, but I can't
remember its name off-hand.

If you have any other questions concerning Openview System Mgr, I'd
be more than happy to try and help you with them.

Michael
