So, why not try to do this on MPE? While the shell isn't perfect,
there is a lot you can accomplish there. Pick up GNU C++, write your
makefiles, and you're off!

Now, to answer your original question, I tend to buck the trend, here.
While we do use Linux in support of our UNiBACK backup product (ok, ok,
PLUG ALERT), we actually use FreeBSD commercially for certain Unix
support in house. I personnally use FreeBSD at home and in a number
of other installations I've done.

FreeBSD has grown out of Berkeley Unix, is very stable and fast. The
last time I tried to REALLY USE Linux, it had too many problems.
True, many of those are being addressed, but only recently has Linux
become ready for prime-time. In the meantime, FreeBSD just keeps working
and working and working .... much like MPE.
