I missed the earlier messages in this thread, so I apologize in
advance if the following is not quite on topic.

CASPER, the plug-in replacement for SPOOK, has a command: WATCH
The WATCH command prints new spoolfile lines as they are found, and
terminates when the spoolfile is eventually closed by the writer.
It's part of the System Manager's Toolbox from Lund.

I think some other product has something similar (MPEX?)

Note to Randy: you could also check when the number of writers goes to 0
(FFILEINFO item 34).
