www.hppro.com has an article, tagged "DCE, Active X and CORBA do mix,
after all. Learn how to mix the software equivalent of oil and water."
Someone has been showing interest. It got some ink. I would like to hear
(or read) an HP response, too.
OTOH, they do have a point: people are more inclined to accept and
maintain the status quo than to push the envelope. How many shops are
still on ANSI 74 COBOL for no reason other than status quo? How many
shops have made sure that there ANSI 85 code does not contain obsolete
features that should not be in the next standard? I have talked to COBOL
programmers who know how to use 'global' data in C, but have never used
it in COBOL, and think that it would be a bad idea to do so. I've even
worked with programs that used intrinsics to access KSAM files, instead
of letting the language (ANSI 74 COBOL) do this for them. Mind you,
whether you agree that shops should do these things, these are just
examples of maintaining status quo.
