hi all!

please read this all the way to the end (hahaha)

i've got two mpe machines on a *tiny* network. there are no
routers or switches -- just a hub. there's no
dns....nothing sophisticated. both boxes have a hosts file
set up with entries for different things on this network.
one of the mpe systems is a a-class with 7.0pp1. the other
is a 937 running some level (i don't know offhand) of 6.0.

if i try to telnet/ftp from the 937 to the a-class it works
marvelously. however, this is what i get going from the
a-class (or even a pc) to the 937:

:ftp
File Transfer Protocol [A0011001] (C) Hewlett-Packard Co.
1990
ftp> open xxxxx
Cannot connect to host: xxxxx (999.999.999.999) (FTPERR 9)
Connection refused (SOCKERR)
ftp> quit
:telnet xxxxx
Telnet Client [A7000000] (C) Hewlett-Packard Co. 1994
Trying...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host

the goofy thing is pinging the 937 works -- so i know that
it's minimally present on the network. (tracert (from a pc)
goes straight to the 937 (as expected)) afaik, nothing has
a duplicate ip address. the network on the 937 has been
stopped and restarted (although the box hasn't been rebooted
in months). the services file has an entry for (many
things, including) telnet and ftp. any thoughts? -
d
