Maybe the rumor was started because we have a 5 year standard support
window and we laid out a roadmap for the next 3 year (total 8 years or
2005). However, the 5 years doesn't begin the day the machine is rolled
out, it begins from the date it is discontinued (what was the officially
supported life of the Series 70? Maybe 13 years, 84-96? And you can still
get support for the 70 from third parties.)
While, as with investments, "historical returns do not guarantee future
returns," I (my personal opinion) would not be surprised to see 3ks running
in the year 2010 and beyond.
