FWIW, there used to be a (shareware?) product called CLImate that purported
to bring a Command Line Interface to the Mac. (I say "used to be" because
a quick search failed to show anything on it more recent than 1995.)
What Mark is referring to, I believe, is the forthcoming Mac OS X (ten),
which is based in part on BSD and the Mach microkernel.

Supposedly, the command line will be available for those who seek it out,
but it will not be visible by default. (I say "supposedly" because until
the final product ships, who knows?)
Then again, as I've not loaded any of the Developer Previews, other people
are much more knowledgable about this than I.
Incidentally, for some detailed analysis of Mac OS X (the preview
versions, anyway), start with

Apple, of course, has lots of documentation on Mac OS X at
http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/macosx/macosx.html
though it's difficult to know where to go after "System Overview."
The hype is at
