I am looking into a related problem as documented in SR 5003-278960 where a
POSIX program run from the MPE/iX CI aborts when it attempts to redirect
$STDLIST (stdout) to a circular file.
 
However, it would appear from your post that your problem is with an ANSI C
program(?).  I don't think it is a duplicate problem, in which case this
should probably be filed as a separate SR.  (POSIX and ANSI C have distinct
but similar _start routines, including separate _open_std_file routines to
open up stdin, stdout, stderr).
