During this holiday season, my family and I are traveling around the East
Coast and Canada. During a transit period between the mountains of western
Pennsylvania and the People's Republic of Maryland, we made a slight detour
off the Pennsylvania Turnpike. We drove northeast from the Somerset exit
towards Shanksville and Lambertsville, hoping to find the spot where United
Airlines Flight 93 (Boeing 757-222 N591UA w/ 38 passengers and 7 crew flying
from Newark to San Francisco) crashed on 11 September, 2001.

There were a few very small signs showing us where to turn, but it was not
well marked. I had set my GPS the night before to help us find the way. We
got to the spot, lost in the forested hills of the countryside. We drove to
the spot where 41 brave passengers and crewmembers defeated the evil plans
of the Islamic terrorists, fighting them and in the process causing the
plane to crash.

The crash site is very small, as the plane went down at a very steep angle,
probably almost vertically and at very high speed. The wreckage has all
been taken away and the hole has since been filled in. On the freshly
filled in dirt, a small memorial has been hastily erected. I was able to
take a few pictures, and I placed two of them at the Nikon website for those
of you who want to see them.
My GPS showed the location to be at 40deg 03.65N and 078deg 54.395W, at an
elevation of 399 feet.
Watch that wrap.

If that doesn't work, go to www.nikonnet.com, and click the "Albums" button.

The first picture shows the temporary memorial erected right on the spot
where the plane went in. The second picture shows the demarcation between
the hole (filled in) made by the plane (on the left) and the existing
terrain on the right.

Lest we forget...

Kind regards,
