1.  The 3000 has been upgraded, e. g. PARISC just like autos.
2.  What's rear wheel drive got to do with it, anyway.  The
VW Beetle was a rear engine drive model and got excellent
gas mileage.

BTW, I see VW is coming out with a new Beetle, but it is a Golf
with a different skin.  Shame on them, but I guess an air cooled
engine is too difficult to produce economically.  It requires
tighter tolerances and better material then is used to today.  I
am not sure that is the reaon, maybe somebody else knows better.
