Tape drive(7980) conversion to SCSI

We are on mpe 6.0 and converted our HP-IB 7980 to SCSI. We got the converstion kit that consisted of two boards and 3 chips. We installed the boards and the chips but now the LED on the tape drive stays on NO TAPE and the unload button does not open the door on the drive. 

Anyone seen this and have any ideas as to what to do to get the drive to open the door?  We can write/read with it but it's a pain to have to pull it out of the rack to load/unload tapes.
